Asian-American Congregation
Evangelism, Mission and Justice Ministries

The Asian-American Congregation has a strong evangelistic, mission and justice ministries focus. It works to carry out these ministries with the greater Bellaire UMC family.

The congregation has worked to raise awareness about and to assist communities struggling with immigration issues, poverty, homelessness and medical care needs. It has collaborated with the Duke Divinity School Center for Reconciliation and the Church and Society ministry of the greater Bellaire UMC family to bring a reconciliation workshop to Houston and continues to work with the Center.

The congregation extends its communion table on the first Sunday of each month to include the homeless community by preparing 75 lunches to be distributed by SEARCH to the Houston homeless community. Each month, members of the congregation also work at Project Cure to prepare medical supplies for shipping to those in need around the world. The congregation provides scholarships to college and seminary students in the Philippines and also helps assist several churches there. Additionally, with the support of the greater Bellaire UMC family, the congregation sponsored and participated in two mission trips to the Philippines in 2007 and is sending 20 youth and adults during the last week of December 2008 to the Philippine Christmas Institute for youth to work in the impoverished community of Malis, Philippines. The congregation continues, with the greater Bellaire UMC family, to support the "We Shall Return" economic development project in Malis, Philippines.

Goals for the future include working to develop and increase the outreach of its College and Young Adult ministry from a core of young adults within the Asian-American Congregation. Additional goals are to explore ways to reach out to both the Filipino and Latino communities in the Houston area and abroad.
